Smooth Trans Focus Technology
The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS is a mid-telephoto prime lens that boasts a sophisticated optical design that makes it a perfect addition to the G Master family. Its Smooth Trans Focus technology uses an APD Apodization element to reduce incoming light, resulting in images with beautifully blurred backgrounds, silky bokeh, and sharpness on your main subject. The lens also features Sony’s Direct Drive SSM for fast, smooth autofocus. With the same robust design as other G Master lenses, the 100mm F2.8 lens is dust and moisture resistant, making it ideal for creating professional quality portraits in a variety of challenging environments.
G Master Series Quality
The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS is part of the G Master lens series, well known for impressive resolution, beautiful bokeh, and reliable build quality. This lens is no exception, offering the smoothest bokeh yet thanks to its Apodization filter, a unique feature that makes it ideal for creating dramatic portraits with soft, evenly blurred backgrounds that don’t distract from your subject.
Portrait Lens for Full-Frame E-mount Cameras
While it’s designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, it can still be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 150mm equivalent focal length. This mid-telephoto prime lens captures incredible, sharp portraits both in studio, or outdoors in natural lighting.
Apodization Filter Creates Smooth Bokeh
Boasting an f/2.8 aperture, the apodization filter renders it between T5.6 and T22, as marked on the lens in T-Stops. Sony’s Smooth Trans Focus is achieved via an internal Apodization element that works like a round gradual ND filter, gently reducing the light that hits the edges of the lens. This produces exceptionally smooth background blur with minimal double-edge effects. It also results in perfectly soft, round bokeh while leaving your main subject looking beautifully sharp.
11 Blade Rounded Diaphragm
An 11-blade, rounded diaphragm further lends to the creation of circular bokeh in out of focus areas, especially when working with a shallow depth of field. The design has been optimised to ensure that the round aperture shape is maintained when shooting wide open or stopped down.
14 Elements in 11 Groups
The lens has 14 elements in 11 groups, including an aspherical element and an extra-low dispersion element to suppress spherical aberrations and reduce chromatic aberrations respectively. This also ensures consistently high resolution and sharpness throughout the entire image.
Reduced Highlight Distortion
With an optical design that helps minimise highlight distortion caused by vignetting on the image periphery, the lens is able to consistently produce round out-of-focus highlights all the way to the edges of the frame in both the foreground and background.
Direct Drive SSM Auto Focus System
The Sony FE 100mm STF G Master lens uses Sony’s Direct Drive SSM system with their piezoelectric motor for fast, precise, and quiet autofocus, helping you capture brilliant, high-quality stills and video when shooting moving subjects. The lens supports contrast and phase detection AF, making it an ideal partner for high-performance Sony camera bodies.
SteadyShot Image Stabilization
Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation helps minimise camera shake, resulting in sharper images even when using slower shutter speeds and shooting handheld with the 100mm lens. This stabilisation system is an excellent addition for photographers of any level.
Macro Ring Switch
A macro ring switch brings the lens's minimum focus distance to 0.57m, where its bokeh capabilities can be used to great effect. In this macro mode, the lens has 0.25x maximum magnification, providing high resolution capture of fine details up close.
Manual Aperture Ring and Focus Hold Button
The 100mm G Master’s manual aperture ring clicks for tactile feedback, or can be de-clicked if silent aperture adjustment is preferred or required for video. A focus hold button on the barrel locks your focal position, or can be set to perform a specific function from within your camera’s menu.
Nano AR Coating
Sony's patented Nano AR Coating is used on the lens to suppress stray reflections that might cause flare and ghosting, especially when used in backlit situations. It also helps deliver high contrast, excellent colour clarity, and deep blacks.
Robust Design with Dust and Moisture Sealing
Rounding out the Sony FE 100 mm F2.8 STF OSS G Master Lens, is the series’ signature tough dust and moisture resistant build, allowing it to be used in high-wind and light rain. A rubber seal on the lens mount ensures the connection between it and your camera is safe, providing you with reliable performance even when you’re out shooting in unpredictable, harsh environments.
