The Sony’s FDR-AX700 camcorder shows off a new 4K-capable 1-inch CMOS sensor that can capture HDR footage with Hybrid Log-Gamma with an impressively realistic colour and brightness range. The versatile 12x optical zoom ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens starts from an ultra-wide 29mm (35mm equivalent) and combined with Sony’s clear image zoom technology can easily record far away subjects. Combined with lightning fast hybrid autofocus with 273 phase detection AF points and a massive 84% frame coverage the AX700 can shoot anything and everything from home videos, family holidays, weddings and events to professional productions with multi-camera setups.

With a massive 1-inch 14.2-megapixel image sensor the AX-700 captures full 4K footage and uses a stacked design to achieve the ultra-fast readout speeds required for UHD and super slow-motion footage. The large sensor creates a shallow depth of field for beautiful cinematic footage and Sony’s back-side-illumination (BSI) technology enhances low light performance to minimise image noise when shooting at higher ISO settings.

Enhanced BIONZ X Image Processor

The huge amount of data captured by the sensor is fed into a BIONZ X image processor that crunches the numbers to deliver the ability to capture high resolution HDR/HLG video and super slow-motion recording of up to 960/1000 fps. The processor also enables the camcorders ultra-fast autofocusing speeds for incredibly accurate AF performance.

29mm Wide-Angle Lens with 12x Optical Zoom

Using a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens with a T* coating, the camera delivers excellent image quality with an incredibly versatile 12x optical zoom that allows you to capture a range of cinematic shots without needing to change lenses. The lens uses advanced aspherical as well as extra-low dispersion glass elements to ensure that image contrast and resolution is exceptional, even when shooting backlit subjects. Controlling your framing is easy with a large zoom rocker for variable speed control.

Optical Image Stabilisation and Clear Image Zoom

Built-in Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode minimises vibrations and camera shake when shooting handheld to deliver consistently smooth footage across the entire focal range. The active mode is especially useful when shooting while walking and can be combined with the zoom modes to produce steady footage, even at the impressive 24x clear image maximum zoom.

XAVC-S Recording in 4K and Full HD

Thanks to the high-quality image sensor, the camcorder captures 4K and Full HD video and can record in Sony’s XAVC-S format for high bit-rate recording as well as AVCHD. The XAVC-S format combines quality with workflow flexibility and storage efficiency, and captures footage with bit rates of up to 100Mbps for 4K and 50Mbps for Full HD. It also supports 100Mbs recording at 120fps in Full HD for slow-motion shooting with no time limits.

High-Resolution OLED Viewfinder with 3.5-inch LCD Touchscreen

The bright 2359K dot OLED EVF eliminates colour breaking for sharp accurate visibility, even in sunny conditions. Combined with the 3.5-inch touchscreen this lets you easily frame your shot and manually focus with confidence. The 1555k dot screen articulates fully so you can compose shots from more creative angles and the touch function lets you change autofocus by tapping the screen.

Quick Motion and Super Slow Motion

The camcorder not only records 120fps slow motion in Full HD with no time limits, but using Sony’s slow & quick (S&Q) mode can also shoot with a range of different frame rates from as low as 1fps for creating time-lapses and as high as 960/1000fps, depending on whether the camera is set to PAL or NTSC mode. This ultra-fast capture mode allows you to shoot 40x super slow-motion sequences in bursts.

Instant HDR Footage with Hybrid Log Gamma

HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology is fast becoming the standard for delivering true-to-life footage due to its wide colour gamut and colour range that more accurately captures what our eyes see. The AX700 shoots HDR footage with HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) which provides a realistic picture quality without requiring colour grading, just connect to a HLG-compatible TV for playback. If you prefer more control the camera shoots S-Log2 and S-Log3 colour profiles for a significantly wider dynamic range once it has been colour graded.

Wide Coverage Hybrid Auto Focus System

The FDR-AX700’s ultra-fast hybrid focus system combines the best of phase and contrast detection autofocus for amazingly fast and accurate results. 273 AF points cover 84% of the frame which combined with Sony’s Lock-on AF capabilities and wide area coverage ensure that fast moving subjects remain in focus, even while panning and tracking. The tracking depth range and subject switching sensitivity can be adjusted for different conditions for absolute autofocus precision.

Integrated ND Filters

Built-in 1/4, 1/8 and 1/64 ND filters allow you to control the light level without changing camera settings for better exposure control. This allows you to shoot in bright outdoor conditions with the aperture wide open to capture beautiful shallow depth of field shots without risking over-exposure.

Dual Storage Media Slots for Recording Flexibility

For longer recording sessions the camcorder is equipped with double SD card slots that allow you to record simultaneously on both cards to create an identical backup, or alternatively the dual card system can be set up as an overflow in the relay recording mode, which automatically switches from one card to the next when space runs out.

Customisable Manual Lens Ring and Control Buttons

A manual control ring around the lens barrel can be set to control either focus or zoom using a dedicated toggle button, and the cameras iris, gain/ISO, and shutter speed can be quickly adjusted using the buttons conveniently located on the side.

Built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, LANC Port and Wireless Remote Control

The cameras built-in Wi-Fi with one-tap NFC setup unlocks a world of creative possibilities that allows you to preview your composition from your phone, start and stop recording, and transfer files to your mobile device. A built-in LANC port allows you to control the camcorder with a LANC compatible accessory and a wireless controller is also included.

Assisted Workflow Tools

Designed to offer professional recording features in a compact portable body the AX700 supports standard SMPTE timecode to embed crucial information for significantly easier multi-camera editing. 8-digit user bit code support is also included for improved file management on large scale projects and the camera can be setup to record lightweight proxy files at the same time as the high-resolution files for less CPU intensive editing.

Multi-Interface Shoe

The camcorder is equipped with Sony’s Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe that supports a range of accessories like wireless microphones, LED lights and more. The multi-interface shoe can work as an audio input from the UWP series of wireless receivers in combination with the 3.5mm stereo mic input and headphone port to increase the audio production value of your project.
