Built From a Strong Reputation
Since the release of the first A7R in 2013, Sony has been steadily improving upon the formula, and the latest iteration, the A7R V, is no different. This camera packs in an impressive 61 megapixels, far more than most mirrorless cameras on the market today. That means you'll be able to produce highly detailed, large-scale prints without any problem whatsoever.
Impressive Auto Focus Capabilities
But it's not just the high-resolution images that make the A7R V great for photography; it's also the autofocus system. With 693-Point High-Density Phase Detection AF points covering nearly the entire image sensor, you'll be able to lock onto your subject quickly and accurately, no matter where it's located in the frame. Compared to the previous A7R IV, the newer version boasts a 60% improvement when tracking human eyes and a 40% performance improvement for animal recognition.
The AI processing unit featured in the Alpha 7R V utilises deep learning AI to process immense volumes of image data, delivering breathtaking results. For Human autofocus recognition, AF acquisition has been dramatically increased through AI with "human pose estimation", using more than just face and eyes for detection, delivering accurate autofocus even if the subject is wearing sunglasses, a motorbike helmet, or is even facing away from the camera.
AF Subject Recognition has also expanded to include Insects, Aeroplanes, Cars/Trains, in addition to Human, Animal and Birds for both Stills and Movie mode.
New 5-Axis Image Stabilisation on the Sony A7R V
Complimenting the high resolution, you'll find the new A7R V features a high-performance gyro sensor for blur detection. This capable tech teams up with the optimised algorithm to realise an 8-step compensation effect for stills. This means the camera can now detect if a single pixel is blurred and, if so, compensate for the blur resulting in more stable framing when using compatible lenses.
Advanced Shooting Options
This new camera features several advanced shooting modes. One of these modes is Pixel Shift Multi Shooting, which automatically adjusts the camera's settings in response to changing conditions. Another choice is the ability to use Selectable RAW options, which allow users to choose between different compression levels for their RAW files. This can help optimise one's workflow and minimise storage. Finally, the 10fps burst mode with AF/AE tracking can be used to capture up to 583 compressed RAW files in a single burst.
Sony A7R V's Flexible LCD Monitor
Turning your attention to the camera's rear, when you first pick up the Sony A7R V, you'll find the impressive new 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor with a 3.2-type large screen. New angles are easily obtainable thanks to the ingenious design; however, if you prefer using the EVF to look through, expect the best with the class-leading 9.44 million dot QXGA setup.
Spectacular Movies
With a 61MP sensor at its core, it's no wonder the A7R V pulls the stops to produce detailed 8K (24/25p) and 4K (50/60p) movies. Upon pressing the record button, the AI-based autofocus kicks in by offering real-time tracking and wide autofocus. Users can fine-tune their recording experience using support functionality such as autofocus assist, breather compensation and focus map - all handy settings filmmakers demand.
Multi-resolution and Multi-RAW Selection
As first seen in the Alpha 1, the Alpha 7R V supports the multiRAW file selection of Compressed RAW, Uncompressed RAW and Lossless RAW. Lossless RAW captures approx. 50% to 80% file size without quality degradation when compared to Uncompressed RAW, saving on storage. RAW file sizes are also supported, with full-frame options of 26MP and 15MP, and APS-C scan options of 26MP and 15MP.
Pixel Shift Multi Shoot Upgraded
When using the new Imaging Edge Desktop PC application, images which were captured using Pixel Shift Multi Shoot are automatically detected, and corrections for small pixel movements, such as people, clouds and leaves, are made during compositing. By taking advantage of Pixel Shift Multi Shoot, images can be captured at 240.8 megapixels with greater RGB data accuracy.
Redesigned Mode Dial for the true Hybrid
The Mode Dial on the Alpha 7R V has been redesigned to the two-tier design, as seen in the Alpha 7 IV. The bottom dial shifts between Stills, Movie, and S&Q. The top dial changes the mode. This design allows fluid and fast in-the-field changes between photo and video mode.
