Smooth Defocus with the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS Lens

Designed with portrait photographers in mind, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens features Canons Defocus Smoothing (DS) coating to deliver ultra-creamy out of focus areas. The Defocus Smoothing coating has the effect of gradually decreasing the transmission factor from the centre to the periphery of the lens, allowing backgrounds to fall in a more gradual and linear fashion.

Smooth Specular Highlights

The Defocus Smoothing is acheived by using a vapor-deposited coating that’s added to two elements within the 85mm f/1.2L DS. This apodization technology works by gradually decreasinge the light transmission factor from the centre to the periphery of the lens to produce a smoother out of focus characteristic, particularly when rendering specular highlights.

Super Wide f/1.2 Lens Aperture

An excellent choice for low-light conditions, the 85mm has a f/1.2 aperture for better light transmission. It’s not just about being brighter though; the large aperture combined with the short telephoto focal length creates a super shallow depth-of-field that allows you to focus (pun intended) the attention of your audience.

9-Bladed Circular Aperture

The Canon RF mount lenses have been designed specifically for the Canon R series of mirrorless models, with a customisable control ring that can be set to a range of different options from the camera. The control ring is slightly raised making it easy to distinguish between the rings.
