The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K brings extreme resolution 6K recording at 50p to Blackmagic’s incredibly popular line of pocket cinema cameras, which combined with support for popular EF lenses, deliver incredible versatility. The camera also marks the introduction of a new super 35mm HDR sensor that delivers the same impressive 13-stop dynamic range performance of previous models but with an even shallower depth of field for that cinematic look.
Large Super 35 Image Sensor
Boasting a bigger sensor than the BMPCC 4K the camera can record with an impressive 6144 x 3456 resolution, capturing more detail than ever. The increased resolution provides greater framing versatility in post-production as well as the ability to stabilise handheld footage. If you’ve ever shot 4K footage for a Full HD project you’ll understand and appreciate having a little extra resolution to play with in post-production.
High Dynamic Range
Blackmagic made a name for themselves designing cameras that capture rich details in the highlights of your shot as well as the shadows, and the BMPCC 6K is no exception. The sensor captures a ridiculous 13-stops of dynamic range, allowing you to easily meet the growing demand for HDR content. By shooting in 12-bit Blackmagic RAW, you can adjust colour temperature, exposure, saturation, and even ISO in post-production.
Same Great Colour Science
Building on the success of the previous 4K version, the new black magic 6K camera features the same ‘Generation 4’ colour science that made the original so popular with cinematographers, production companies and pro video shooters. It uses a complex 12-bit gamma curve that preserves colour in the highlights and shadows for better results. This also allows you to cut footage from both cameras together without issues.
Huge Range of EF Lenses Available
One of the standout features of the camera is the super versatile EF lens mount. This means you can use existing Canon EF glass from the DSLR and cine line-ups, so there’s no waiting for new lenses. The mount supports electronic communication, so you can adjust focus and iris, but not only that but IS lenses also support for hand-held shooters.
Handling and Design
Constructed from a lightweight carbon fibre polycarbonate composite, Blackmagic designed the camera with features usually reserved for higher end models but in a compact portable body. The heavy-duty mount supports hefty lenses and features a large heat sink to disperse heat. It features a traditional style handgrip with dedicated buttons for ISO, white balance, and shutter angle. The back of the camera has buttons for iris control, high frame rates, playback, menu control and more.
Dual Native ISO Gain
With an ISO range from 100-25,600, the Black Magic Design 6K Cine Camera has Dual Native ISO settings of 400 and 3200. At the higher native ISO, the camera can achieve cleaner performance in low light, while shooting at the lower ISO retains more detail in bright conditions.
Massive 5-inch Touchscreen Display
Save carrying around a bulky external monitor with the camera’s large 5-inch rear LCD screen, which can display histogram, peaking and focus guides. The camera supports LUTs for shooting with log profiles, which can be baked into the footage. The screen is touch sensitive for focus control, menu adjustments and is bright enough for use in daylight while on location.
Robust and Versatile Interface
Designed for professional cinematographers the BMPCC 6K offers industry standard connections and ports, with a full-size HDMI output, mic and headphone jacks. It also features a 12V DC power socket, a mini XLR audio input, as well as built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wireless remote camera control. Not only that but the kit also includes a license for DaVinci Resolve Studio.
UHS-II, CFast 2.0 and USB-C Media
Able to record onto either standard SD card with support for UHS-II speeds, as well as CFast 2.0 cards, the Black Magic Pocket Cinema 6K Camera has a USB-C port too, which supports direct recording to external SSD media drives. Being able to support high capacity storage with ultra-fast data transfer speeds is necessary when shooting in 4K or 6K in 10-Bit ProRes or 12-Bit Blackmagic RAW recording formats.
